Our program was specially designed to expose new graduates and seasoned APCs new to emergency medicine to the fast-paced emergency department environment, allowing for EM skill set development over a three to six-month period.

During stage one of the program, all newly hired mentees work directly with an experienced EM APC, presenting every case and implementing an appropriate care plan.

In stage two, mentees work one-on-one with the attending ED physician in the same manner, focusing on more complex cases and communication with consultants and admitting physicians. This stage exposes the mentee to the practice styles of many of our physicians.

In the third and final stage of the program, the emphasis is on practice efficiency and patient flow, as well as increasing the number of patients the mentee is able to safely manage at any given time. During this stage, cases are staffed with the attending ED physician per our group APC staffing policy.

At the end of the mentorship, mentee performance is reviewed with input from physician and APC mentors. This process also involves a review of charting and basic productivity metrics. It is expected that mentees who successfully fulfill the requirements of the program will be offered a full-time position with the group.
